Nudity in the Tarot

BW 300 On the U.S. Games Systems, Inc. Facebook page, we're talking about nudity in the Tarot–and it's generated quite a few opinions!

Full-frontal, danglies, American "prudishness"–we're hearing it all on Twitter and Facebook.

You can be a part of the conversation at the USGS Facebook page at http://on.fb.me/c0MdhA or via Twitter at http://twitter.com/usgstarot.

Or you can feel free to grab a beverage of your choice, sit a spell and share your thoughts here at the Fool Stop Tarot Blog.

Dan Staroff, creator of the Tarot of Sephiroth observed: When Tarot of the Sephiroth was in pre-production at US Games ten years ago…We had a serious discussion about nipples. They stayed in. Have times changed for the better or worse?

So tell me, dear readers: What do you think about nudity in the Tarot? When is nakedness "too much"? What about clients? Is it ever warranted?

Weigh in!

Help Kris Waldherr Pick Five Animals!

SW Cover Kris Waldherr, creator for the Goddess Tarot and Lover's Path Tarot, is almost finished with the Sacred World Oracle, a deck that will be published by U.S. Games Systems.

But Kris needs your help.

You see, she wants to add five more sacred animals to her deck. In her latest Newsletter, Kris writes:

Whale Autumn is the time of harvest, of bringing long-aborning projects toward fruition. Big news: I'm closing in on finishing The Sacred World Oracle, with just five cards left to illustrate. I also have a first draft of the booklet roughed out. Fortunately, the design has been finalized. Woo hoo!

I'm thrilled that U.S. Games Systems will be publishing the SWO; they're also the publisher of my Goddess Tarot and Lover's Path Tarot. If the planets align as hoped, the deck will be available in mid-2011. I'll keep you updated as production progresses.

Can't wait to take the Sacred World Oracle for a test run?  Besides the free reading available at the official Sacred World Oracle site, the SWO is also featured at TarotGoddess.com, a site I designed devoted to all things tarot.

With five cards left to illustrate, I thought it would be fun to get your feedback: What other sacred animals should I include?

The decks is divided into quadrants, each devoted to the elements of earth, air, fire, and water. I'd like to add another card to the quadrants of earth, air, and fire; two cards to water. Here's what I have so far:

Phoenix Bat
Bluebird
Butterfly
Dove
Dragonfly
Owl
Peacock
Raven
Spider
Bear
Bull
Cat
Dog
Fox
Lion
Rabbit
Ram
Snake
Carp
Crab
Bat Dolphin
Frog
Salmon
Swan
Turtle
Whale
Centaur
Chimera
Dragon
Falcon
Firebird
Horse
Phoenix
Salamander
Scorpion

I invite you to send your card suggestions to kris [at] kriswaldherr dot com. If I use your suggestion, I'll send you a copy of the Sacred World Oracle when it's published. (In the case of two or more people sending in the same suggestion, a drawing will be held.)

Need to refresh your memory? You can view the SWO art so far here.

Aren't the images from Kris's upcoming Sacred World Oracle gorgeous? I have a few animals in mind that I might pass along to Kris, myself!

You can subscribe to Kris's free newsletter here. You can visit Kris Waldherr online at ArtandWords.com.

Tarot Dilemma #1 – What Should Donna Do?

Woman Holding Q Mark I'm pleased to introduce another great feature to the Fool Stop Tarot Blog–Tarot Dilemmas!

Tarot Dilemmas are fictional situations where YOU get to test your skills as a reader.  Consider the dilemma, ponder the cards and render your advice–it's that simple…and fun! There are no wrong answers, so let those insights fly.

The benefits? Beginners get reading practice and seasoned Tarotists hone their skills–and we all gain from seeing the cards in new ways!

But this inaugural Tarot Dilemma has yet another benefit.

Oh yeah, baby…it's giveaway time again! Woohoo!

This time, you can win the new Sun and Moon Tarot by Vanessa Decort. You may remember that I profiled this deck a few weeks back (click here to read the post and see card images).

Cover 180 How can you win? Simply share you take on the cards for this first Tarot Dilemma as if you were actually giving this fictional person advice. Want to multiply your chances of winning the random drawing? EVERY post you make on this thread counts as an entry!

No one-word answers, though, or mere words of agreement or disagreement. Instead, please contribute thoughtful and honest information, feedback and advice to our make-believe querent or your fellow posters–as well as any questions you may have (in case you happen to be insanely curious like myself).

Remember to be considerate! (But I didn't have to tell you that…you guys are great.)

So without further ado, I present our first Tarot Dilemma!

Donna Rambunkle has a problem.  [Suddenly, I feel like Gene Rayburn from Match Game…]

Her pre-teen daughter, Seneca, has been uncommunicative and moody. Donna isn't sure what's wrong or how she can best relate to her daughter. She wants to be supportive, but not intrusive–available, but not smothering.

She comes to you for advice. From the Fenestra Tarot, you draw the following cards:

Fenestra 6 Cups Fenestra 2 Sw Fenestra 9 Pents

SIX OF CUPS  2 OF SWORDS  9 OF PENTACLES

Based on the above cards, how do you assess the situation? What will be your advice to Donna?

Remember, all thoughtful, considered posts will be entered in the random drawing to win the Sun and Moon Tarot by Vanessa Decort…but you only have until Sunday, August 29, 2010, midnight EST to post!

Have fun, and good luck!

The Fenestra Tarot is illustrated by Chatriya Hemharnvibul. You can find out more information about this deck at the U.S. Games Systems, Inc. website at this link. The ISBN for this deck is 1-57281-560-4, and is available from your favorite online retailer or brick-and-mortar store. If you don't see it in stock, just ask for it.

And the Winner of the Goddess Tarot Set Is…

Noah Picking Winner Small As you probably know, I posted a contest here at the Fool Stop Tarot Blog two days ago…and the result is in!

I compiled all the names (duplicating the ones with multiple chances) and printed them out. Then, I had my 11-year-old son cut the names into strips, put them in his black silk top hat hat and pick a winner. (Yep, that's him! He pulled the winner's name just moments ago.)

Enough already!, you're probably thinking. Just announce the winner!

OK, I shall!

The winner of the Goddess Tarot Book and Deck set is…

Elarbolcelta!

Congratulations, Elarbolcelta! Please email me your snail mail address at JanetUSGS@atlanticbb.net and I'll be sure to get your prize out to you pronto.

Everyone, thank you so much for playing along with me! I was thrilled to see over 20 people participate in our inaugural giveaway. WOW! Keep watching the Fool Stop Tarot Blog for more chances to win, because more fun contests are coming soon.

Ask the Queens Advice Cards by Kris Waldherr

Ask Cover 160 Which Queen might have advised "Choose your allies well, or they will come back to bite you on the asp" — or maybe "The soil is only as good as the seed"?

Based on her book Doomed Queens, U.S. Games deck creator and illustrator Kris Waldherr playfully posits what past Queens, Empresses, Princesses and female rulers might have said in her new Ask the Queens Advice Card Deck.

Beloved for her exquisite Lovers Path Tarot and popular Goddess Tarot, both by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., Ms. Waldherr offers theoretical advice from the Queens in this deck, as well as interesting historical tidbits about each female leader. For example, did you know that:

  • Empress Alute, the consort of the Tongzhi emperor, died at twenty in 1875 after less than three years occupying the dragon throne of the Qing dynasty with her young husband. No one knows what–or who–caused the empress's demise. One theory suggested she was poisoned with gold leaf, a popular mode of murder at the time.
  • Queen Blanche of Bourbon was renowned for her piety and comeliness, her future was destroyed when her father, the Duke of Bourbon, wed her to King Pedro of Castile–a.k.a. Pedro the Cruel. Pedron imprisoned his wife in the castle of Arevalo. Eight years later in 1361, he arranged for her death. At the time of her demise, Blanche was twenty-two years old.
  • Born in 1919, Eva Peron was the bastard daughter of an impoverished seamstress mother. When she became first lady of Argentina, Evita never forgot her humble origins and made it her mission to help the poor. Evita embraced her work as if she knew her time was limited. It was: She was diagnosed with uterine cancer at the age of thirty and died in 1952.
