How To Find A Tarot Study Group part 1 of 3

Celestial8Pentacles It can be challenging to find others to study Tarot with. You sometimes may get "those" looks from your friends and family. Sometimes that can feel very lonely. One of the things many of us seem to crave is the ability to bounce ideas off of others. So how do you find others? There are actually more than a few resources out there for you.

Let's start by talking about

Getting, Giving and Generosity

Holiday
6pents Whimsical6pents   One card that represents giving is the Six of Pentacles. Right now is a big Six of Pentacles time for  many of us because it's the holiday season. Shopping is fun for some and not-so-much for others. Personally, I like to avoid the malls. A friend of mine, however, dives in with glee. He tells me that shopping energizes him and the more people the merrier. How about you? Malls? Online shopping? Something in between?

Well, what about those small, independently-owned stores? U.S. Games Systems, Inc. would like to give a big shout-out to the independent retailers. Without them, many of us wouldn't be able to pick up that newest Tarot deck or unusual deck of cards. And aren't some people just hard to buy for? Who is the hardest person on your holiday list to shop for? Do you use Tarot to help you come up with a gift idea? Maybe pulling a card with the intent "What does (person's name) want the most for a holiday gift" would give you an idea. If you try it, let us know!

Holidaystore
Please do let us know where you shop. We'd love to hear about your favorite indie stores in your community. Feel free to share their website or concrete store address here. Let's spread the love for those who help us find what we enjoy.

Cards shown are the 6 of Pentacles from the Whimsical Tarot and the 6 of Pentacles from the Deviant Moon Tarot.

Christian Tarot: Oxymoron or Paradox?

Guest Blog by Cheri Gaudet

I am a Catholic tarot reader. At first glance, this might seem like an oxymoron. Everyone knows Church doctrine condemns divination. How do I reconcile that with my personal tarot practice?

This is a serious question that has implications for both Christians and tarot readers, who in my experience typically do not think of themselves as having anything in common. At their worst, such thoughts can result in

Wednesday’s Mystery Card Revealed

RWS_Tarot_14_TemperanceDeviantMoonTemperance

~~~~
So did you guess correctly that Wednesday's mystery card was Temperance from the Rider-Waite Tarot? what do you know about this card? When you get it in a reading, how do you generally interpret it?
ViscontiSforzaTemperance Did you know that the Visconti-Sforza Temperance did not have wings? I think that her hair gives the idea of wings. Do you agree? Did you notice that she doesn't have anything flowing from her jugs? You are just left to imagine that she is transferring something. The colors are reflected in the Rider-Waite. Her red arms become the angel's red wings.  Her blonde hair is the same only shorter. Her feet don't touch water and earth like the Rider-Waite Temperance, but both have mountains in the background.
Another bit of trivia about this card is that  it is thought that this card was done by someone other than the artist who did the majority of this deck. Why it is a different artist seems to remain a mystery though.
Patrick Valenza takes a unique look at Temperance in his Deviant Moon Tarot pictured above. His moon-faced winged woman is a far cry from what I imagine Plato thought of when he offered up his virtues. Did you know that some people refer to Temperance as Restraint? How does that change your own opinion of this card? Do you already read that as part of the card's meanings?
The curious face of this Temperance draws me in. Is the hidden face of the moon peeking out the one we need to focus on? When you compare it to the sweet and simple angel of the Tell-Me Tarot, do you get different meanings or not? Something else to review is which hand is up and which is down?  Below are the Temperance card from the Tell-Me Tarot and from the Archeon Tarot. What are some things that you see in all of these cards? What is missing from the original Rider-Waite in these others (or re-interpreted) that you notice?
TellMeTemperanceArcheron_Temperance
What is a Temperance card that you love? Is it one of these or does another one catch your fancy? Think about the colors as well as the vessels in use. What are they pouring? Is it tangible or not tangible? What does that mean to you?
 Looking forward to talking about Temperance…in moderation of course.
And, just for fun, here's Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He's Temperance in that unpublished Tarot deck from Rachel Pollack and Paul Lee.
Tarot Impossible: What Was The Question?
Agentphelps Hello Agent Reader.  We've experienced some difficulty with Agent Tarot. She was in the middle of a Tarot reading when some nefarious mad scientist abducted her. We've dispatched Agents Collier and Carter to rescue her. Your job, should you choose to accept, is to determine what the question might have been.
Africantarotcover Here is what we know. She was using the African Tarot deck. This colorful, simply drawn deck is often overlooked but has a lot to offer someone looking for a bright and amusing Tarot deck. We know that Agent Tarot was reading for Miss Lulu Lovelorn. Miss Lovelorn is also missing.
The cards are the Queen of Pentacles, the Ace of Swords and the Page of Wands. Can you apply your skills at backward Tarot reading to deduce what the question might have been? Once we know that, we can determine why these two were abducted and for what nefarious evil plot.
Tarot Quilt Spread
I saw this idea mentioned on Living Tarot on Facebook. They were talking about making a Tarot quilt. I happen to love quilts. I'm not a quilter, but the idea of sleeping under something that has been put together with such care and love amazes me. So I started daydreaming about what cards I would put in my quilt. So many cards came to my mind. The Empress and the Queen of swords for feminine creativity, beauty and clarity of thought. Then there was the 6 of cups for those happy memories. Of course the 9 of Coins so I could enjoy my rest after a hard day's work.
So I developed this Tarot Quilt spread for you to try.
The Tarot Quilt Spread
Row one is the grounding row. This is where you find what you like to wrap yourself up in so you can feel safe and protected. The cards I got were the 7 of Swords, the Page of Pentacles and the 7 of wands. What would you make of that group? I see it as mental mult-tasking, budgeting and standing my ground.
Row two is the comfort row. This what you like to wrap yourself up in so you can feel nurtured and creative. Here I received the 4 of Cups, the Moon and the Ace of swords. From this I take away the hope of one more good thing, intuitive knowledge and sudden inspiration.
Row three is the dreams row. This is what you like to wrap yourself up in so you can have beautiful dreams and reachable goals. I drew Temperance, the Knight of Cups and the King of Cups. I like this row the best because it tells me I can create my own balance and I have more holy grails to seek with friends who will nurture me.
What cards did you draw? What do you think it means? Would you sleep under this quilt?  If you could pick the nine cards, what would you choose?
The deck depicted is the Tell-Me Tarot.
Thanksgiving Spread
Cornucopia_blog A spread should give you insight into areas of your life both good and bad. If we only focus on what we need, we can lose sight of what to be grateful for.  Here in the United States we celebrate a Fall holiday called Thanksgiving.
But did you know that Americans don’t have a lock on this holiday? Eight countries total celebrate a Thanksgiving meal. They are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Switzerland and, of course, the US.
I don’t know how they do it in other countries, but my family’s tradition involves cooking up your best dish then sharing with friends and family. We follow that up with watching football and parades.
Here is a spread to help you digest what areas of your life to be grateful for and what areas  you may to attend more.
The layout is mean to look like a table with loved ones around it.
  • TurkeyWhat sustains you. This is the meat of your life. Don’t be surprised if you find an unusual answer here. It may not be what you expect.
  • StuffingWhat completes you. This is the extra side of life that makes everything just better.
  • Cranberry SauceWhat you don't get enough of. Okay, I love cranberry sauce but if you hate it, you can replace this with something else. But this is something in your life that brings you great joy that you need to do more.
  • Green Bean CasseroleWhat you get too much of. This is that thing in your life that you overindulge in. Perhaps this will show you some place where you can let go of some things?
  • BreadWhat you need to share. What do you have that you can share with others. This doesn’t have to be a physical thing. It can be a gift or skill that you have that can enrich others and sustain them.
  • PieWhat you should enjoy more. And we all need to remember that it is okay to eat dessert. We hold ourselves back from enjoying life sometimes. This is a card to remind us that it’s okay to have one more slice of pie.
  • BlessingWhat your blessing is in life. I think this is a very important card because we need to count our blessings.
